The Fairchilds
Coming from a long line of buisnessmen, physicians, and entertainers, the Fairchild family is one of generous wealth. They have hold in English textiles and the wine industry, owning several vineyards in the south of France, as well as one in Australia. In addition to his international buisness affairs, Robert co-owns a theatre with his younger brother, Edward.
The "Fairchildren" are well known in their county for their inordinate wealth and, what is considered to be, their more-than-generous genetics. Despite all their enviable attributes, the family is very well liked among those in their home town, and very popular in the social circles of London.
The family serves as something of the backbone of the story; their presence something constant throughout. Both the main heroine and antagonist belong to the family. Alan is adopted by the family. The house in which Geoff and Alan live in, the theatre the protagonists practically grew up in, the villa in Italy where the group had summer retreats and where Kate and Alan have their honeymoon; all of these backdrops belong to the Fairchild family. Their influence (and money) open doors that would otherwise be closed to the characters (not to mention add to Ben's superiority complex).
