Character Analysis

Rufus is Melanie's cousin.

Born in 1980, he is the eldest child and only son of Edward and Elizabeth Fairchild. From a young age on, Rufus has always been exuberant and cheerful; a unique and flamboyant imp.

At 14, Rufus came out to his friends and family, stating the fact baldly and without the slightest bit of hesitation. His friends and family accepted him warmly, with the exception of Ben... though that didn't matter much to Rufus, never having liked Ben much anyway.

In 1996, at the age of 16, Rufus began holding hands with Nikolaj Sorensen in public. Nikolaj's parents hadn't coped with Nik being gay quite as well as Rufus' family had, having a screaming fit at him before kicking him out of the house. After that, Nikolaj went to live with Rufus and Ru's parents.

Though wildly flirtatious, Rufus remains a faithful and loving boyfriend to Nik. The two remain together throughout their lives, actually being married in a civil union in early 2007.

Rufus is usually only serious in the gravest of moments, but is very protective of his younger sister, Rebecca, and his relationship with Nik. He is ready to fight tooth and nail for those he loves, whether he thinks he can take down his challenger or not.

No matter what, Rufus always remains unabashedly bold, unapologetically flamboyant, and irrepressibly himself.

Quotes

It had to be said, that there was something very poetical about Rufus’ face. One minute it was sculpted and glowing like an archangel from a fresco…the next, it was impish and flirting. He commanded your attention, acted endearingly himself, and liked it if it confused you.

His voice was soft and lilt, with a hint of a lisp they all figured had nothing to do with speech impediments. Some people at times found it irritating, but the voice was kind and laughing and invoked thoughts of mischief and family.

Nik paused in front of Mel’s cousin, grinning at the stack of books. “So… ran to get a ‘quick read’, huh?”

Rufus nodded. “I just…picked up a few things.” Nik’s gaze saying plainly that grabbing up four volumes of Proust at eleven quid a pop was a bit much, Rufus smiled up at him and held up one of the thick paperbacks, this one with a rich purple cover. “But look how gorgeous they are.”

******************************

Rufus grinned, almost tenderly, up at Nik. “Are you trying to make me feel guilty for wanting to snog Gary Oldman? Cuz it won’t work.”

(Rufus, after Gael's murder)

Most of all, he didn’t understand why every time he reached for Nik’s hand in public, he felt his stomach tighten up with dread, when that had never happened to him before. Shame had never been an emotion Rufus was familiar with. Perhaps, he wasn’t ashamed…just afraid. But then, being afraid was something he wasn’t used to either.

(...)

All he could think was that if this…the solid warmth of Nik’s body beside him, the love in his voice, the weight of Nik’s arm around his waist… if feeling the way all that made him feel meant he was going to hell….it was fine by him. If Roger and John were right, and it was the fanatical, hateful zealots who got into heaven…he would gladly go in the opposite direction.

******************************

That Ben was practically a full-blooded relative of Rufus was clearly a sign of some genetic fluke of nature.

******************************

Rufus looked around, nose scrunching up distastefully. "I smell testosterone."

"Yeah, Ben and Adge had another fight in here."

"Eugh." Rufus rolled his eyes, looking as if his nostrils had been greatly soiled at the mention of Ben's name.

******************************

It was so rare to see Rufus smile like that without him looking like he had knowledge of some naughty secret. The smile wasn't flirting, or mischievously, or even vaguely dirty... just content. Almost serene as he watched Nik walk to the kitchen, with eyes that simply clung on with love.

So rare that it made Alan feel like he was seeing something very personal, so much so that it made his face heat up.
