Character Analysis

Born in 1952, Jennifer is the elder of Frank and Jenna McGregor's two daughters.

Originally from Wales, Jennifer and her family moved to Surrey when she was 10. There she met Ivy Colt and Nicole Boyd. The three girls bonded almost instantaneously and formed a very deep and lasting friendship. It was in her new home that Jennifer also met Paul Hewitt and Robert Fairchild.

Paul, she found tolerable enough, but Robert, she wanted nothing to do with, finding him attention-seeking and arrogant (odd, considering how similar Robert and Paul were at the time).

At fifteen, Paul and Ivy began seriously dating, meaning that Jen and Robert had to form a fragile friendship. After a short while, their friendship strengthened and, then, out of the blue, they began dating. Their relationship progressed quickly and, after finishing school, they became engaged.

They were married in April of 1971 and nine months later had their first children; twins, Oliver and Beth.

Comfortable and happy in her life at Fairchild Manor, Jen became dedicated to motherhood... and the family grew. After Oliver and Beth, came Nani in 1974 (shortly after Paul and Ivy's wedding), Lily in '75, Wendy in '76, Ben in '77 (a month before Nicole's marriage to American rancher, Scott Hart), Melanie in 1980, and Garen in 1981.

In 1984, Nicole and her husband, Scott, returned from where they had been living in Montana, bringing with them their little boy, Alan. Jennifer and Ivy were ecstatic to have their trio of friends reunited and made whole again, a joy that lasted only a short while. In 1987, Nicole and Scott were killed in a car crash, leaving their son an orphan. As Alan's godparents, Jennifer and Robert put up a custody battle against Nicole's sister, Linda Logan, and her husband, Steven. They lost the case but, in eight years, gained custody of Alan when it was found that the Logans had been physically abusive to the boy.

Jennifer became a surrogate mum to Alan, treating him as good as her own child; she and Robert giving him a home and access to a proper education.

Jennifer defines herself first and foremost as a mother, loving, dedicated, and fiercely protective. Her motherly warmth is a pervading force in the Fairchilds' home and extends itself even to Melanie's friends.
