Character Analysis

Garen is the eighth and youngest child of Robert and Jennifer Fairchild.

The baby of the family (indeed the baby... Oliver and Beth are a full ten years older), Garen seems to take the most after Oliver, with the same handsome, cheerful charm.

Unlike Ben, Garen loves having Oliver to emulate and, also unlike Ben, idolizes Mel's friends, wanting to tag after them when he was younger.

Melanie, who is second to youngest in the family, is especially fond of her little brother, doting on him and playing teacher to him when they were small.

At 13, Garen was sent to a boarding school he had asked his parents to allow him to attend. There, he met his girlfriend, Natalie, and, subsequently, her brother, James Portman, as well as James' friend, Kate Brennan.

In the summer of 2004, having become engaged to Natalie, Garen invited his fiancee, her brother, and Kate to Fairchild Manor, and, the rest, of course, is ... er, well, the plot of the second book.
